BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY:

The Director of Communications is responsible for providing leadership and expertise across the core areas of the Foundation’s Marketing and Communications Department by developing, writing and editing integrated strategic fundraising communications to support the organization in meeting its fundraising goals. The Director will collaborate closely with the Vice President of Marketing and Communications to ensure the Foundation’s communication projects are planned and executed with the highest of standards for excellence. The Director will also actively collaborate with staff members in the Foundation, the Board of Trustees, University Relations, the Office of the President and campus units to create relevant content and creative strategies, and independently develop and manage several projects simultaneously. In addition, The Director serves as a member of the senior management team. 

Responsibilities include developing, supervising and executing targeted print and digital communications designed for multiple audiences across all marketing communications channels. An experienced writer, editor and content developer who has a keen eye for detail and creative brand management, the Director creates newsletters, stewardship collateral, press releases, event remarks, gift proposals, concept papers, case statements, advertising assets, and special report project materials. In this capacity, the Director supervises social media management, website management/optimization, and ongoing production of digital assets to ensure a high standard of quality and thorough integration of consistent messages across all marketing channels. The Director directly supervises the Marketing and Communications Manager and liaises with the Vice President daily to actively push cross-department MarCom projects forward.  

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

· Ensure integrated marketing communications across all channels (online, print, social, events, video) are accurate and on brand to meet the Foundation’s strategic objectives 

· Serve as primary communications resource for all departments as needed to ensure Foundation engages in best practices and possesses the highest of standards in writing style, brand consistency, clarity and tone

· Collaborate with development colleagues and others who may need assistance crafting and editing proposals, letters of inquiry and concept papers for gifts of more than $100,000

· Work may entail serving as lead writer/editor and creative director for special proposals

· Collaborate weekly with Director of Stewardship and Marketing and Communications Manager to build and maintain content communications calendar for targeted donor communications

· Provide communications leadership and expertise (writing, editing, conceptualizing) and oversee production of collateral for the department’s stewardship and events team including Raising Montana, President’s Club Insider, President’s Club welcome materials select correspondence, invitations, donor impact reports and other collateral as required

· Actively seek out and research stories and write compelling content that supports the strategic objectives of the department

· Collaborate with others in the department, across the Foundation and on campus to create marketing and communications plans and materials around principal gift announcements and other special events

· Draft news releases and pitch Foundation stories to media in concert with Vice President. Act as point of contact for reporters, photographers and editors covering Foundation news and liaise with University Relations on all media related projects.

· Draft event remarks for Foundation leadership and others as needed

· Draft and maintain the annual budget for expenses related to communications; reviews and authorizes expenditures from the budget to ensure appropriate use of funds; monitors budget to ensure fiscal responsibility

· In collaboration with Vice President develop and execute creative concepts for Foundation print advertising

· Establish reporting/tracking process with Vice President to ensure the Marketing and Communications Department carefully measures and analyzes the effectiveness of marketing and communications initiatives against stated objectives

· Manage a team of contracted designers, writers, printers, photographers and other vendors as required

· Recruit and supervise Marketing and Communications Manager 

· Supervise student employees as required (e.g., Student Graphic Designer and/or Student Photographer)

· Promote a culture of high performance and continuous improvement that values learning and a commitment to excellence 

· Mentor and develop staff using a supportive and collaborative approach on a consistent basis

· Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, conduct annual performance appraisals, and recommend salary adjustments

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

The successful candidate will be an experienced communications professional in writing marketing and communication content for all channels, new releases, and vertexing copy, and remarks with a persuasive voice. We seek a candidate who demonstrates a high level of commitment to the mission, vision and core values of the UM Foundation. Other qualifications include: 

· Ability to meet deadlines and handle multiple projects simultaneously

· Superior project management skills

· Ability to understand academic and scientific concepts and communicate their meaning to lay audiences

· A keen eye for graphic design excellence with demonstrated creativity and initiative

· Knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel and Outlook 

· Commitment to the professional growth of the marketing and communication team

· Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with Foundation staff, University personnel, donors and the public

· Bachelor’s degree in fields such as: marketing, journalism, communications, or a related field 

· Five years of professional experience in a majority of the following areas: fundraising or proposal development, journalism, public relations, digital marketing, advertising, persuasive writing, video production, creative storytelling or grants selection/programming

· Demonstrated success in relationship-building skills

· Demonstrated success in managing multiple projects simultaneously

· Experience in high-level project management 

· Experience in managing project teams

· Experience working with designers and managing production of printed materials

· Experience working with outside vendors to advance marketing and communication department objectives

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

· Advanced degree in related field such as: marketing, journalism, communications, or related fields

· Experience working in fast-paced environment that deploys integrated communications, multi-media, public relations and complex cross-channel marketing plans designed to support an organization’s overall strategy and direction

· Demonstrate an ongoing commitment to leveraging latest communications trends, including leading-edge tactics for creative use of social media and other digital platforms

· Experience working in higher education environment

· Higher Education advancement communications experience

· Expert knowledge of university communication objectives and an ability to translate them into effective communications

· Speechwriting experience

· Video production experience
